چکیده

A recent line of research suggests that an event’s temporal distance from the present has an effect on the way in which it is likely to be construed. Specifically, more distant events are proposed to be represented primarily in terms of abstract, decontextualized information, while events in the near future tend to produce relatively more concrete, situation-specific construals. In the current study, we examine the extent to which this sort of effect can differentially emphasize commonalities between two events. Similarity ratings were collected for pairs of events sharing either high-level or lowlevel commonalities, and described as occurring in either the near or distant future. Consistent with predictions, an interaction was observed between temporal distance and commonality level. Broader implications for cognitive processing are discussed.

Representation Across Time: Generalizing Temporal Effects on Perceived Similarity

Recent research suggests that the distance of a described event in the future can affect the way in which it is construed. In a previous paper, we demonstrated that temporal distance can influence the perceived similarity between two events by differentially highlighting their abstract and concrete attributes. The current paper extends and clarifies these findings, demonstrating similar effects...

Representation over time: the effects of temporal distance on similarity.

Similarity is central in human cognition, playing a role in a wide range of cognitive processes. In three studies, we demonstrate that subjective similarity may change as a function of temporal distance, with some events seeming more similar when considered in the near future, while others increase in similarity as temporal distance increases. Given the ubiquity of inter-temporal thought, and t...

Effects of representational distance between meanings on the neural correlates of semantic ambiguity.

Psycholinguistic research demonstrates that representational distance between meanings influences recognition of ambiguous words. Our goal was to investigate whether the neural correlates of ambiguity are also modulated by representational distance as a function of syntactic similarity (i.e., grammatical class) and meaning dominance. In an event-related fMRI experiment, participants completed a...

Temporal Dimension Evaluation by Fuzzy TOPSIS Method

This paper evaluates and ranks the temporal dimensions, known as fourth dimension of urban design, of a number of places in a city by TOPSIS method. TOPSIS method is technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution. TOPSIS is one of the renowned methods for classical multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems that defines the positive ideal solution and negative ideal solution...

Distance and Similarity of Time-span Trees

Time-span tree in Lerdahl and Jackendoff’s theory [12] has been regarded as one of the most dependable representations of musical structure. We first show how to formalize the time-span tree in feature structure, introducing head and span features. Then, we introduce join and meet operations among them. The span feature represents the temporal length during which the head pitch event is most sa...
